History

The Lake of the Ozarks was created by the Bagnell Dam, which was constructed between August 1929, and April 1931. At the time of its completion, it was the largest manmade lake in the United States and remains one of the largest in the world. With 1,150 miles of shoreline, it attracts over 5 million visitors each year and is lined with more than 70,000 homes.

Top Attractions

Located beneath Thunder Mountain, Bridal Cave has been a popular attraction for over 70 years. Known for its impressive formations, the cave also features a Bridal Chapel and offers guided tours, a gift shop, a rock shop, and a nature trail. 

Situated near the Lake of the Ozarks, Stark Caverns is known for its stunning geological formations and ancient bear beds. Visitors can explore Moonshiner’s Dam and the Wishing Well, enjoy activities like sluice mining and geode cracking, and participate in specialty tours like the Black Light Tour and an In-Cave Escape Room. 

Covering 17,441 acres south of Osage Beach, this park is Missouri’s largest. It includes 85 miles of shoreline, two public beaches, boat ramps, picnic areas, 56 Ozark Caverns, hiking trails, and opportunities for horseback riding and naturalist programs. 

This museum provides insight into the history of the Lake of the Ozarks and the Bagnell Dam construction. After visiting the museum, take a stroll along the path to the lakeside gardens and gazebo for beautiful lake views—perfect for photos, relaxing, or picnicking.
