Exploring Fair Grove MO History

Welcome to Fair Grove, located in Greene County just 18 miles away from Central Springfield. This town has a present-day population of 1,582 and is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area.

What’s in a Name? Fair Grove’s name was inspired by a grove of trees resembling Fair Grove, North Carolina, where its early settlers originated.

A Town Rooted in Education Fair Grove was never regularly laid out as a town. The first building, Duke’s Schoolhouse, a log cabin, went up in 1846. About thirty years ago, the folks in this growing community decided to honor their love for freedom by dedicating their first village building to education. It was a simple setup – basic architecture, benches made of hewn slabs, and no desks. Many of Fair Grove’s leading citizens have fond memories of that old log schoolhouse.

The 1900s In the year 1926, the inception of Route 66 occurred, traversing the town of Fair Grove. Functioning as a key pathway for westward-bound travelers, this highway embodied the adventurous and exploratory essence of the American spirit.

During the 1970s, the Fair Grove Historical & Preservation Society was established with the aim of conserving and renovating a grit mill located in central Fair Grove, which is now recognized as Wommack Mill. The Wommack Mill is a living museum depicting life at the turn of the 19th century and early 20th century.
