Nixa, Missouri is a charming city located in Christian County. It has a rich history which began as a farming community to its growth into a thriving city. In this blog post, Kody Gideon and Victoria Gideon will take you on a journey through time to explore the history of Nixa and learn how it has evolved over the years.
Early Days
Nixa’s origins lie with its early settlers, who farmed the lush streams in what’s now Nixa. This scenic area drew farmers in search of fertile land. As the community expanded, it became a travel hub, just a half-day ride from Springfield, making it a convenient rest stop for freight truckers traveling between Springfield and Arkansas.

The Naming of Nixa
In 1991, the community decided to officially name itself, choosing to honor an elderly blacksmith who was a beloved figure in the area. Nicholas A. Inman, affectionately known as “Nick,” became the namesake of the town. To create the town’s name, “Nick’s” was shortened to “NIX,” and his middle initial “A” was added, resulting in the name we know today: Nixa.

Educational Milestones
In 1899, the Nixa School District was established, bringing together a dozen one-room schools in the surrounding area. Students received their education in an upstairs room of one of the downtown buildings, marking the beginnings of Nixa’s commitment to education.
Growth and Advancement
Nixa’s population steadily increased over the years. In 1950, census takers counted 509 residents within the city limits. In 1963, Nixa received its own postal zip code, 65714, which further solidified its identity as a distinct community.
One significant milestone in Nixa’s history occurred in 1968 when the new Highway 160 was completed. This highway bypassed downtown Nixa, replacing Main Street as the primary north-south road through the city. This development had a profound impact on Nixa’s accessibility and connectivity.
The Turn of the Century
As the 20th century came to a close, Nixa experienced a substantial influx of new residents. In the year 2000, the official census counted 12,124 residents in Nixa, marking a significant increase in population.
Nixa Today
As of the latest data, Nixa’s population has grown to 24,749 residents, a testament to its continued appeal as a great place to live, work, and raise a family. The city’s vibrant community, strong educational institutions, and rich history continue to shape its identity.
