Located just 27 miles from Springfield, this community, founded in 1856, has weathered storms—both literal and metaphorical—throughout its remarkable journey.
Early Economic Stimulation
The history of Marshfield is deeply intertwined with the expansion of the Frisco Railroad, which was built through town in 1872. This development played a pivotal role in stimulating early economic growth, positioning Marshfield as a primary producer of livestock, poultry, and dairy products. The railroad not only connected the town to broader markets but also laid the foundation for its agricultural economy.
Tough Times
Despite the promising start, Marshfield faced its share of challenges. In a tragic turn of events, the town experienced two devastating tornadoes—one in May 1878 and a major one in April 1880. These natural disasters resulted in 99 deaths and a staggering million dollars in damages. Undeterred, the resilient spirit of Marshfield prevailed, and the town pressed forward.
The early 1920s brought significant fires that swept through Marshfield, causing widespread devastation in 1920-1921. Remarkably, despite the destruction, the town continued to grow. The fires may have charred the landscape, but they couldn’t extinguish the determination and community spirit that define Marshfield.
Present-Day Marshfield
Today, Marshfield stands as a testament to resilience and community strength. With a population of 7,686 residents, the town has evolved from its railroad roots into a vibrant community that cherishes its history while embracing the opportunities of the present.
