Early Settlers
The story of Willard begins with the arrival of the first families who laid the foundation for the town. In 1836, Oscar Farmer became one of the first individuals to settle in the area. Dennis Kime and his wife arrived in 1854, followed by George and Elizabeth Sloan in 1860. Remarkably, the original home of George and Elizabeth Sloan still stands today, serving as a tangible link to Willard’s past.
Railroad Development
The turning point in Willard’s history came in 1884 with the arrival of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad. This development marked the beginning of Willard’s transformation into a significant transportation hub. The railroad laid its first track, connecting Springfield to Willard and extending further to Kansas City. The track, later known as the “High Line,” played a pivotal role in the town’s growth.
Frisco Highline Trail
Today, the “High Line” has evolved into a lighted walking and fitness trail, forming a part of Missouri’s Premier Rail-Trail. This transformation not only preserves the historical significance of the railroad but also provides a recreational space for residents and visitors.
How Willard Got its Name
Initially intended to be named Robberson after Dr. E.T. Robberson, who had platted the town, Willard got its name through an interesting twist of fate. When it was discovered that another municipality already bore the name Robberson, the city was renamed after Mr. William Willard of Lebanon, MO. Mr. Willard was the surveyor working for the railroad, and his contribution became etched in the town’s history. Willard was officially founded in 1884 and later incorporated in 1949.
